Santiago de Querétaro Es la capital del estado mexicano de Querétaro de Arteaga y cabecera del municipio de Querétaro. Se encuentra localizado a 51 kms. de Vergel de la Peña. La ciudad fue fundada el 25 de julio de 1531. Su gentilicio es queretano. El nombre colonial original fue "Santiago de Querétaro", que después de la Independencia de México quedó solamente en "Querétaro" o "Ciudad de Querétaro". Sin embargo, después de su nombramiento en 1996 como Queretaro, Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad, se retomó el nombre original de "Santiago de Querétaro", aunque muy pocas personas fuera del Estado la identifican con su nombre completo. El nombre original en purépecha era "K'eretarhu" o lugar de la gran ciudad, mientras su nombre otomí es "Ndämxei" o lugar del juego de pelota.
